George Petrides

The sculptor

Born in Athens in 1964 and based in Athens and New York, George Petrides creates figurative sculpture for public spaces and institutions. His work gives lasting form to history, identity and remembrance through the human figure.

His work has been placed in hospitals, museums, diplomatic missions, educational institutions, places of worship and corporate collections: 31 placed or collected works and 9 forthcoming placements across seven sectors and eight countries. Institutions include Tiffany & Co., the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations and Aretaieion University Hospital, and his sculpture of Davy Crockett was accepted by the White House as a Presidential Gift in 2025.

Since 2022, Hellenic Heads has reached eight cities, including Venice in parallel with Biennale Arte 2024. Its Berlin presentation continues through 8 January 2027.

Method

He combines traditional sculptural methods with digital fabrication. His process begins in clay and moves through 3D scanning, digital sculpting and fabrication in recycled materials; each work is then reworked and finished by hand. Other works are cast in bronze.

Education and background

Petrides studied Classics at Harvard College (B.A., 1985) and pursued graduate study at Stanford University (M.B.A. and M.A., 1993).

He began studying and practicing art part-time in 1996 while working in international finance, including senior roles at Lazard Frères and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. He first enrolled at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in 2001, continued his studies over the following two decades, and received a Certificate in Sculpture in 2022. In 2017, he committed to art full-time.
