Best known as a frontiersman, Davy Crockett defended the Alamo during Texas’s fight for independence. Though he had the opportunity to leave the mission as prospects worsened, he chose to stand with his 190 comrades, dying in the battle on March 6, 1836. He is portrayed during the battle before daybreak on that date, holding a torch aloft in the darkness. He wears the iconic frontiersman outfit, while the base features debris from the Mexican cannon assault. He holds a Bowie knife, borrowed from Jim Bowie, at that moment in the Alamo’s infirmary. His dynamic pose and open, screaming mouth convey his defiance in the face of an overwhelming enemy.
